ERIN CAVES

Tenor

Biography

American tenor Erin Caves was raised in Stockton, California, and completed his musical studies at the Yale University School of Music and The Juilliard School. He apprenticed with Central City Opera, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Glimmerglass Opera, Chautauqua Opera and began his European career at the Dutch International Opera Centrum in Amsterdam.

Internationally, Erin Caves received particular attention for his debut as Loge in Das Rheingold at the German National Theatre Weimar (including a DVD release by Arthaus in 2009) and his performances of this role at the National Reisopera Netherlands in October 2009. It also was for Loge that he was nominated for Seattle Opera’s International Wagner Competition 2008. The finalists’ concert took place under the baton of Asher Fisch in August 2008. The artist received equal attention for his interpretation of Mahler´s Das Lied von der Erde with the Staatstheater Stuttgart in December 2009.

Besides Loge, roles in comparable repertoire include: Alwa/Lulu, Siegnot/Pfitzner’s Die Rose vom Liebesgarten, Erik/Der fliegende Holländer, Stolzing/Meistersinger, Siegmund/Die Walküre, Max/Der Freischütz, Florestan/Fidelio (1805), as well as Narraboth/Salome, Hans/Die verkaufte Braut, and Grigory+Dmitry/Boris Godunov. Erin Caves is looking forward to debuting as Tambourmajor/Wozzeck and the title roles in Parsifal and Lohengrin. He has also performed such varied repertoire as Hoffmann/Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Cavaradossi/Tosca, Ismaele/Nabucco, the Evangelist Johannes/Schmidt’s Das Buch mit sieben Siegeln, Sergej/Lady Macbeth von Mzensk, Porcus/Jeanne d’Arc au Boucher, Prince Sou-Chong/Das Land des Lächelns as well as the title roles in Werther and Don Carlos (both the 4- and 5-act versions).

Mr. Caves has performed with Oper Essen, Staatstheater Stuttgart, Staatstheater Wiesbaden, Staatstheater Kassel, Nationaltheater Weimar, Oper Chemnitz, Nationale Reisopera Nederland, Oper Basel (incl. two productions with Calixto Bieto) as well as Oper Nürnberg, Oper Frankfurt, Oper Bonn, Landestheater Linz, New York City Opera and the International Music Festival in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Erin Caves’ interest lies in the slightly heavier, specifically German Romantic, repertoire and in roles with distinctive dramatic character. In these, he has become known for sublime interpretations with perfect diction and intense stage presence.
